Six suspects including Minister Mervyn Silva’s son Malaka Silva have been further remanded until November 28 as per the orders issued by Colombo Additional Magistrate M. Shahabdeen on Tuesday.

The suspects were arrested on charges of attacking a British couple in Bambalapitiya recently.

Even though the suspects were brought to court at 1.30 p.m. as rescheduled by court earlier in the day, the identification parade was postponed for a later date, as the witnesses in the case failed to appear in court for the hearing.

Noting that the witnesses should be granted a later date to identify the suspects, the magistrate rejected the request made by the lawyer representing the respondents to “quash” the identification parade.

Minister Mervyn Silva expressed the following views:

In 1970, I am the one who came with the first Parliament of Mahinda Rajapaksa from Beliatte – and I will go when he goes. There is no conspiracy here. Many people are speculating about a number of conspiracies.

A tense situation arose outside the court when Mervyn Silva was speaking to media. An individual who arrived at the scene argued with Minister Mervyn Silva and left.
